This is stunning time lapse footage of the Northern Lights, composed of shots captured over one week in Norway near the Russian boarder. Lately it has been one of the best times to see the Northern Lights in all their dazzling glory. Shot with a Canon 5D @ 30fps, mounted to a motion control dolly, compiled from nearly 22,000 images.
For those that haven’t seen this cool picture, it has been making it’s way around the intertubes this week. Its seems the couple were setting up for an memorable picture, (which is now earning its 15 minutes). When a passing little critter must have been drawn in by the blinking timer lights, and proceeded to pose like he knew how to best frame himself in the shot.
Well if that wasn’t enough some enterprising person set up a web site that will squirrelize your photos. It is a handy little site for those without access (or skills) to photochop. Just enter the path of the photo, set some location and size parameters and voila, you have your own pop-up squirrel. Just be sure to save the new image as they will not stay on the site. This is a quick one I did, from my pictures.
This is an amazing video of the Hubble’s look into deep space. The first deep field shot, as explained in the video, is an area the size of a grain of sand held at arms length. The next sequence shows the ultra deep field images that are rendered in 3D to give a better sense of the size of the universe.
“Hey Dad, do you think there are people on other planets?” “I don’t know, Sparks, but I’d guess I’d say if it was just us, it seems like an awful waste of space.” Contact.
Ok so here is a vampire movie that I can get excited about, “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.” It seems to have a “Something Wicked This Way Comes” feel, which might be from the traveling circus that is home to the freaks. It stars John C. Reilly as the lead vampire and apparent ringmaster of the freaks, which include Salma Hayek as the bearded lady, other notables, Ken Watanabe and Willem DaFoe. This film opens Oct 23rd.
Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

Walking back from lunch today I noticed this nice Camaro, and then though why is there that crappy Papa John’s thingy on top, that’s when I saw Papa John standing next to the car. After I crossed the street I chatted briefly with Sal Masekela about the X-Games, (I didn’t realize I got him in the shot with the Camaro). And the girls were out front of the E! building taping a Fearnet segment. Another day in LA…
The overcast and cool was a great way to continue the games, which got up to high speed real quick as the Supermoto practice was first on tap. Here is a shot of the guys waiting to head out on the track.

The 15th annual X-Games was held in Los Angeles, events are running at The Staples Center and Home Depot Center in Carson, I was at the Home Depot Center for the moto events. This was a practice day for all the moto events.
The day started cool and over-cast, (great timing on the weather) this first shot is looking down the in-ramp to the stadium floor. All pictures where taken with the poor quality camera in my iPhone.
First up for the day was women’s moto x practice, followed by the men’s practice, then went into the rally car tarmac practice. While wandering the course I noticed this spider in the middle of a tire barrier.
The afternoon was freestyle practice, this is over the large dirt feature. The timing was great on getting them both in frame, (with the slow shutter on the iPhone) to bad the distant guy wasn’t doing a trick.
The last practice of the day was the adaptive riders, they are those who have lost limbs or have been paralyzed. This is the second year that X-Games has included this event, and the quality of riders is definitely improving, this guy in the foreground was clearing the 70 foot triple. You can see Mike Schult’z prosthetic leg (which he built in his workshop) in this first shot, the following is four of the paralyzed riders. They race live on ESPN Friday at 5:30 PST.
