Not that I needed to be more geeked up for this film, which will open December 17th, and will be in 3D and 3D IMAX. Disney has released a new wallpaper for TRON, featuring Daft Punk, as they have composed and produced the score for the film. Its quite a stunning image, although it still wont replace the Light Cycle wallpaper I currently have up.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at the IMAX. Well the film was what I had expected, giant fighting robots, big explosions, sexy car shots and sexy girl shots. What I didn’t expect was the Jar Jar Binks robot twins (which were two of the 42 robots in the movie). The presentation in IMAX was great, the explosions shook the air in the room that would rumble through the seats. The presentation was similar for what they did on “The Dark Knight,” the 70mm shots filled the screen and the 35mm shots were slightly letterboxed which was only really noticeable when the scene was bright. I didn’t notice any strange stretching of the image except for a 70mm shot of the fight in the woods, some of the scenes appeared stretch top to bottom, specifically the shot with Sam running amongst the trees. The wide shots looked great on the large robots, which helped to give a better sense of size.
I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX on the 50 foot tall screen, check their web site to find if there is one in your area. I have found the best viewing is from the far back as then the eyeline is about straight on. Be sure its a true large screen thou and not just the IMAX Experience which is a slightly larger screen than normal with digital projection and sound.
The fight sequences mostly ran at too fast of pace, with giant metallic things filling the frame I was not sure if that was a hand, or foot that was being smacked up side the head (or was that a shoulder area) of the pugilists. Maybe Michael Bay wanted to keep the robots moving too fast so you wouldn’t be able to see the “Skynet Systems: Building technology for your tomorrows” logo imprinted on them. On the large screen some of the fast moving shots can be a bit disorienting especially one spinning camera scene.
The tempo of the movie runs well keeping the action and the jokes coming, all in all an entertaining popcorn affair. I had intended to see it in large format, (even before the announcement of the extra running time for the IMAX version) since they did use the IMAX cameras for some of the shots.

Spoilers and plot thoughts after the jump:

For those that are interested in the camera tech for the 70mm film format, Gizmodo has a great tour of the IMAX camera facility.
