From my pursuing of tech sites I have found the consensus is that the $50 HDMI cables at Best Buy are the same quality as the $5 ones that Amazon sells. So when I was getting ready for my TV purchase I bought four six foot and one 15 foot DVI to HDMI (which was about $12). They all worked great and service from Amazon was great.
There were reports going round of Best Buy using this tactic to up-sell cables. In a side by side comparison they used monster HDMI cables saying they were better, but those that look at the set-up have seen they use S-video, or worse RCA-yellow. Which is similar to the “calibration” trick they do.
